Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Julius and I were travelling first class on the train from Hamburg to Cologne because the saver fare for first class was cheaper than the normal fare for second class, which I didn’t understand but I was never that good in math anyway. Also, you should take what you can get, as my mother always says. In first class, the seats have nicer upholstery and there is room for your legs. We didn’t have a seat reservation though and the only unreserved seats that were next to each other were facing the opposite direction of the train and instead of facing the built-in screen of the seatbacks in front of us we were looking into the faces of Mr. and Mrs. Meyer (“with a Y from Offenbach near Frankfurt, eh, your little one is adorable, how old is he?”), who also boarded in Hamburg and were eating salami sandwiches from what looked like an inexhaustible supply. Both things, the smell of salami and sitting backwards, made me feel sick and Julius probably inherited that from me, wh
